Comparing return portal features: Shopify, AfterShip, Loop

Compare documented portal features and limits for Shopify, AfterShip and Loop, including reasons, exchanges and Australian return routes.

Shopify self-serve returns, AfterShip Returns and Loop Returns name different portal capabilities. The comparison below sets out what each documents for an Australian retailer, including where a setting or Australian transport detail is not specified.

Use one comparison brief

Record the store’s order platform, products, return destinations and required outcomes. Compare each portal against the same customer entry, reason capture, outcomes, exceptions, transport and staff-record needs.

Shopify self-serve returns

Shopify’s Setting up self-serve returns and cancellations and Managing self-serve returns and cancellations pages cover setting up and managing self-serve returns and cancellations. They do not specify the customer verification, reason, outcome, exception, label or staff-record controls in the named feature details.

Confirm the store’s available settings, plan, location and Australian return route in Shopify admin before relying on a particular workflow.

AfterShip Returns

AfterShip’s Set Up Your Returns Page describes a branded page with customisable order-lookup and regular and gift-return prompts, process messages, policy and a terms-and-conditions checkbox. Page settings include theme, logo, footer details, social links and languages, with desktop and mobile previews.

The image upload and comments settings can make comments and image uploads optional or required for selected reasons and include shopper instructions. These settings apply across reason groups and can help staff review an item’s condition before approval.

The refund and exchange methods include five resolution-method or settings categories, including variant exchange and condition-based resolutions. Refunds can go to the original payment method or store credit; refund prioritisation for orders with multiple payment methods is available to Shopify users only, and store-credit gift cards are stated for WooCommerce, Shopify and BigCommerce.

Custom workflows are listed for Premium and Enterprise plans across all platforms. They can use product, order, customer or return details; examples include blocking final-sale items, limiting selected products to exchange, hiding add-ons, asking a question, setting return windows and printing extra labels by SKU or product tag.

Key capabilities by provider (Australia-focused)

  • AfterShip: Image & comment requirementsOptional or required per reason; includes shopper instructions
  • AfterShip: Refund methodsOriginal payment method or store credit; prioritisation for multiple payments (Shopify only)
  • AfterShip: Conditional workflowsAvailable on Premium and Enterprise; based on product, order, customer or return details
  • Loop: Reason groupingBy product type; supports parent and child reasons with linked Shopify integration
  • Shopify: Self-serve setupDocumented for setup and management but lacks detail on verification, outcomes, and staff records

Loop Returns

Loop’s Return Reasons feature organises reasons into parent and child reasons, allows optional or required comments, and supports reason groups by product type. Reasons can also be linked to Shopify.

When a child reason is added, comments are not available at the parent level. Return-reason data can be viewed through individual returns or analytics reports.

Make the decision with representative orders

For reason hierarchy, product-type groups and return-reason reporting, Loop names the relevant controls. AfterShip names configurable reason evidence, multiple resolution methods and conditional workflows; Shopify’s named capability is setup and management of self-serve returns and cancellations, with its specific controls to be confirmed in the store’s admin.

None of the named capabilities specifies an Australian carrier, label format or return destination. AfterShip describes extra labels triggered by SKU or product tag, but does not name a carrier or Australian route.

Ask each provider to demonstrate an ordinary return, a reported fault after the voluntary period, an exchange request and the store’s Australian route. Check the customer message, staff action, order record and support hand-off; include an order the portal cannot find and a reported issue that does not fit the reason menu.

The ACCC says it does not resolve individual disputes or give legal advice about a consumer’s right to a repair, replacement or refund. Recheck current plan and integration details before purchase, and choose based on the verified workflow and contract terms, including a clear route for exceptions.
